I remember when not too long ago if you told someone you were an artist they would in turn ask you if you were signed and you would answer almost in embarrassment "no I'm and indie artist" after that it was like they weren't even interested in knowing anything else about you anymore, now it's a totally different attitude toward indie artists, now when you say that you're an indie people are interested to know if you have any product out and where they can get it.
I'd like to share some of my personal insight on being an independent artist, now this is not gonna be a bashing session on the majors or anything like that but nowadays being an indie you have just as much leverage in the industry as a major artist does, the only thing is your doing everything pretty much on your own or at best with a small team, which is cool in my opinion because you have complete control over everything, (ie. how you promote yourself, what image you want to send out, what songs you want to release etc.etc.) now like anyone else getting into the industry as an artist, has one thing in mind, yep you guessed it, Getting a Deal, the fascination and the ever enchanting mystique of getting signed will never go away, hey I'd love to get a major label deal myself, but it's not something that I'm breaking my neck to get at this point even though I do have some labels looking at me right now, I just feel that when it happens it will happen on my terms not theirs, plus I like being in control and my goal is to show that I can generate a buzz on my own by attacking the internet, doing shows, and just keeping my name out there by constantly branding myself. The whole digital experience has really shook up the structure of the industry, think about it, now we can write a song, record it, and upload it to the world in a matter of hours, while I was recording 'The Prelude' I made sure that I did things to promote the arrival of the release by doing mixtape freestyles just so people could get used to seeing the name "E" The R&B Hip-Hop Rockstar, when things really began to pop, I was getting a lot of response from the overseas audience from internet radio and I was even asked to do a mixtape from a producer from Germany named BeatCat, the buzz was so great in fact, that it earned me a bit of rotation on Germany's #1 Urban station JamFM, they were the 1st major station to break "Like That" overseas and the 1st internet station was VogueFm, and then came MTH Black, Dj Blueroom even did some remixes for me, and German spin master Dj. Ice-C broke the record while playing big venues overseas, so being an indie artist definitely has it's perks, but trust me it's a lot of hustlin and grindin, not to mention a lot of sleepless nights. Lol Stay tuned 4 More
